Types of insect bites

A bite may look like a small itchy bump, a cluster of raised spots, a line of marks, or a swollen patch. Some reactions develop a central punctum, while others form a blister or become sore after scratching. Mosquito bite reactions and papular urticaria are terms used for particular patterns, but similar-looking rashes can have other causes. A darker mark may remain after the inflammation fades, known as Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation.

Gently clean the skin, apply a cool compress, and avoid scratching. Photographing the pattern and noting when it appeared can help a clinician assess it. Wash recently worn outdoor clothing and consider whether bedding, pets, plants, or travel may explain repeated marks. For significant itch or inflammation, ask a pharmacist or clinician whether Antihistamine Treatment or Topical Corticosteroids are suitable.

Emergency care is needed for difficulty breathing, faintness, or rapid swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Arrange prompt assessment when redness spreads, pain worsens, pus or fever appears, or the reaction affects the eye. Seek a routine review if marks recur indoors, persist, or do not resemble a simple improving bite.
