Insect Bite Swelling and Itching: What to Know

The body releases inflammatory signals around the bite. Fluid moves into nearby tissue, producing a raised bump, while irritated nerve endings create itch. A larger local reaction can involve more surrounding skin without meaning the bite itself is dangerous. Similar itch or swelling can occur with Hives, Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Scabies, Asteatotic Eczema, Lichen Planus, Psoriasis or a Skin Yeast Infection, so the distribution and skin texture matter.

Wash the site gently and apply a cool compress wrapped in fabric. Resting the affected limb raised may ease swelling. Avoid heat, vigorous rubbing and scratching; cover the area lightly if needed. Ask a pharmacist or clinician about an appropriate itch treatment, especially if you take other medicines, are pregnant, or the bite is near the eye or mouth.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, or widespread welts. Seek prompt medical care when swelling involves the face or eye, pain and warmth are increasing, redness is spreading, pus or fever appears, or the skin becomes difficult to move. Arrange review if itching disrupts sleep, keeps returning, or affects several people in the household.

Ask whether the swelling is a local reaction or a sign of allergy, infection or another skin condition. Tell the clinician when it began, whether the swelling is changing, what touched the area, and which products or medicines you have tried. Ask what to do if the same reaction happens again.
