INR stands for international normalised ratio. It reflects the time blood takes to form a clot, adjusted so results can be compared between laboratories. Because the liver produces many clotting proteins, an abnormal INR can be one sign of reduced liver function. It is not a liver diagnosis by itself: medicines such as warfarin, vitamin K intake, bleeding disorders, and other illnesses can also change it. Other liver tests look at enzymes, bile flow, and proteins, so clinicians interpret the group of results alongside symptoms and medical history.

Tell the clinician about blood thinners, supplements, recent antibiotics, bleeding or bruising, alcohol use, and known liver conditions. Follow instructions about fasting or medicine timing if you receive them. Do not stop a prescribed anticoagulant because of an INR result unless the prescribing team tells you to. Ask when results will be reviewed and whether repeat testing or a Liver Function Test is needed.

Seek urgent help for vomiting blood, black stools, uncontrolled bleeding, severe abdominal swelling or pain, yellow skin with confusion, or sudden severe drowsiness. Report new extensive bruising or nosebleeds promptly, particularly if you use an anticoagulant.

Ask why INR was ordered, whether a medicine could explain the result, which other liver markers matter, and what symptoms should prompt urgent review. Ask whether tests for hepatitis or alcohol-related liver disease are appropriate for your situation.
