What should you know about inner-thigh rash treatment?

A rash in the fold may be intertrigo from moisture and rubbing, heat rash from trapped sweat, contact dermatitis from a product or fabric, or ringworm with a spreading scaly edge. Atopic dermatitis and psoriasis can affect the thighs, while scabies often causes intense itch and may involve close contacts. A drug rash can appear after starting or changing a medicine and may affect more than the inner thighs. Colour, scale, border, itch, pain, blisters, and other affected areas give useful diagnostic clues.

Rinse away new fragranced products, keep the area cool and dry, pat rather than rub, and wear loose clothing. Avoid scratching and avoid using a steroid cream on a rash that could be ringworm, because it may alter the appearance and allow the infection to spread. Do not share towels or clothing if infection is possible. Treatment may involve an antifungal, anti-inflammatory medicine, or another prescription depending on the diagnosis. If a new medicine may be involved, contact the prescriber before changing it unless emergency symptoms are present.

Seek urgent care for facial or lip swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread blistering, skin peeling, purple spots, fever with severe illness, or rapidly spreading redness and pain. Arrange a medical review for a rash that persists, recurs, affects the genital area, develops cracks or discharge, or fails to respond to appropriate care.

Tell the clinician when it began, what touched the skin, whether anyone else is itchy, and which medicines or creams you used. Ask whether testing is needed and how long to continue treatment.
