Inner Thigh Groin Strain: What to Know

Short answer
An inner thigh groin strain is an injury to the adductor muscle-tendon tissues, often causing pain with squeezing the legs, stretching, or changing direction.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical trigger
- Sprint, kick, lunge, slide, or sudden direction change
- Pain clue
- Symptoms often rise with leg adduction or groin stretching
- Return principle
- Progress from daily movement to sport-specific drills
How a strain behaves
A strain may start during a sprint, kick, lunge, slide, or sudden change of direction, though soreness can become clearer after the activity. Tenderness commonly sits along the inner thigh or near the pubic attachment. Pain may increase when bringing the leg inward, stretching the groin, or pushing off. A bruise or swelling can occur. Groin pain can also come from the hip or another structure, so persistent clicking, deep joint pain, back-related symptoms, or pain without a clear muscle trigger deserves a broader assessment.
Early management and rehabilitation
Stop the movement that caused the pain and use comfortable, easy activity while the area settles. Avoid testing the injury with repeated sprints or hard stretching. Cold therapy wrapped in cloth may ease a fresh flare. Once everyday movement is comfortable, guided exercise can rebuild adductor strength, hip control, and tolerance to faster movement. Exercise Therapy may be useful, while Sports Physiotherapy can match drills to your sport. A Return-to-Sport Programme should progress from walking and controlled strengthening to running, cutting, and sport-specific work.
When to seek care
Arrange assessment if you heard a pop, have substantial bruising or swelling, cannot walk normally, or pain is not improving. Urgent care is appropriate for severe pain after trauma, a visible deformity, numbness, a cold or pale leg, fever, or rapidly increasing swelling. Do not return to competition while walking, resisted leg movement, or sport drills still produce sharp pain.
Questions for your clinician
Ask which tissue is involved, whether imaging is useful, when strengthening can begin, how to test readiness for running, and which movement errors or training changes may have contributed.
