Inner Thigh Cyst Under the Skin: What to Know

An epidermoid cyst is commonly a rounded lump beneath the skin that may feel firm or soft and sometimes has a small opening. Its contents can include keratin, a skin protein. Appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis because swollen follicles, abscesses, lipomas, and other skin lumps can resemble it.

Do not puncture, lance, or repeatedly squeeze the area. Those actions can drive inflammation deeper and make infection or scarring more likely. A clinician may examine the lump and decide whether observation, medication, drainage, or removal fits the findings.

Keep the area clean and dry, wear clothing that does not rub the lump, and use a warm—not hot—compress for comfort if the skin is intact. Avoid shaving directly over a tender swelling. Note changes in size, pain, colour, drainage, and recurrence so you can describe them accurately.

If inflammation settles but the cyst returns, cyst removal may be discussed. Steroid injection into the skin may be considered for selected inflammatory lesions, while an abscess generally needs medical drainage rather than home treatment.

Arrange prompt assessment for increasing pain, warmth, redness, rapid enlargement, pus, foul-smelling drainage, or difficulty walking. Seek urgent care if fever, chills, spreading redness, or feeling very unwell accompanies the swelling.
