Short answer

Inner shin splints describe activity-related pain along the inner shin, usually managed by reducing impact while correcting the factors that keep overloading the leg.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical pattern
Pain along the inner shin that builds with impact activity.
Helpful approach
Reduce impact first, then rebuild strength and training gradually.
Check the diagnosis
Focal pain or rest pain needs assessment for other causes.

What inner shin splints are

The term often refers to medial tibial stress syndrome, an overload problem affecting tissues around the inner border of the shin. Symptoms may spread along a length of the bone and become more noticeable with running, jumping, or brisk walking. Flat feet, weak calf or hip muscles, limited ankle movement, a sudden training increase, or unsuitable surfaces can contribute to repeated strain. Inner shin splints are not the same as a stress fracture, which tends to produce more focal pain and needs separate assessment. The pattern and examination matter more than the label alone.

Ways to settle the irritation

Temporarily reduce impact and choose cycling, swimming, or another activity only if it stays comfortable. Use supportive shoes and avoid a rapid return to hills, jumps, or long runs. Once daily walking is comfortable, progressive calf, foot, and hip strengthening can improve load tolerance. Physiotherapy may address mobility, strength, and training progression; gait retraining can help when running or walking mechanics repeatedly stress the area. Custom orthotics may be considered when foot alignment and symptoms suggest they could improve support, but they are not needed for everyone.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment if symptoms persist, keep returning, or interfere with walking despite reducing impact. Seek prompt review for a pinpoint tender spot, pain at rest, swelling, bruising, worsening symptoms, or inability to bear weight. These features can point away from uncomplicated shin splints and should be checked before impact exercise continues.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your tenderness pattern fits shin splints, whether flat feet or ankle stiffness is affecting loading, and which strengthening and return-to-running steps suit your examination.

Questions people ask

Are inner shin splints caused only by running?

No. Jumping, brisk walking, field sports, and other repeated-impact activities can also overload the inner shin.

Can flat feet contribute to shin splints?

They can alter how the foot and leg absorb load, so an assessment can show whether foot support or exercises may help.
