What should you know about inner ear scope?

Short answer

An inner ear scope usually refers to an otoscope examination, which looks into the ear canal and at the eardrum rather than deep inside the inner ear.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

What it examines
The ear canal and eardrum
What it cannot view directly
The deeper inner-ear structures
Before the examination
Mention pain, discharge, surgery, hearing changes, or dizziness

The short answer

The clinician gently places the lighted tip at the ear opening and looks through it. The examination is brief and should not require the instrument to be pushed far into the canal.

What the examination can show

The view can reveal wax, irritation, discharge, a foreign object, swelling in the canal, or changes in the eardrum. An eardrum that appears red, bulging, pulled inward, perforated, or obscured can guide the next part of an assessment.

Hearing and balance structures lie deeper than an otoscope can see. If symptoms suggest a problem beyond the canal or eardrum, a clinician may use hearing tests, balance assessment, imaging, or referral to investigate further.

How to prepare and what to do afterwards

Tell the clinician about ear surgery, grommets, a known eardrum hole, recent injury, discharge, hearing change, dizziness, or pain. Keeping still makes it easier to obtain a clear view; a child may need a caregiver to help them stay comfortably positioned.

Do not put cotton buds, hairpins, oils, or other objects into the ear in an attempt to clear it before the visit. These can push wax deeper or injure the canal. Follow the plan given after the examination, especially if wax removal or treatment is recommended.

When to seek care promptly

Arrange prompt medical assessment for severe ear pain, discharge that is bloody or pus-like, sudden hearing loss, new weakness of the face, significant dizziness, or symptoms after a head or ear injury. Seek urgent help if ear symptoms occur with severe headache, confusion, a stiff neck, or a very unwell child.

For milder symptoms that persist, recur, or affect hearing, a general practice appointment can clarify whether the cause is wax, infection, skin irritation, pressure changes, or another problem.

Questions you may want to ask

Ask what was seen in the canal and on the eardrum, whether wax is blocking the view, and whether your symptoms need a hearing or balance test. If treatment is suggested, ask how to use it, what changes to watch for, and when you should be reviewed.

Questions people ask

Does an otoscope go into the inner ear?

No. It is used at the entrance to the ear canal to view the canal and eardrum. It does not travel to the deeper inner ear.

Can an ear scope examination find an ear infection?

It can show findings that help a clinician assess for infection, such as discharge, canal swelling, or eardrum changes. Your symptoms and examination together guide the diagnosis.

What if wax blocks the view?

The clinician may recommend a suitable way to soften or remove the wax, or arrange removal, before examining the eardrum again.
