How the structures involved in Yellow Fever differ from normal

Short answer

Yellow fever vaccine is usually given into a muscle in the upper arm, and mild soreness or redness at the injection site can follow.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the injection site tells you

A trained vaccinator selects the site after checking your age, body build, medical history and other vaccines due. The vaccine is designed to stimulate protection against yellow fever; a local reaction reflects activity around the injection area and does not by itself show how well protection has developed.

Tenderness, warmth, a small swelling or redness may occur for a short period. Some people feel tired or develop a mild fever. These effects usually settle, but your travel certificate and timing requirements should be discussed before departure.

After vaccination

Keep the area clean and avoid rubbing or scratching it. Comfortable clothing and a cool, clean cloth may ease soreness. Follow the vaccinator’s advice about medicines, travel timing and documentation. Tell the clinic about previous vaccine reactions, immune problems, pregnancy, allergies and current medicines before another dose is considered.

Do not assume a missed appointment or an undocumented dose provides the required travel protection. Keep your vaccination record available and ask a travel clinic to check the schedule for your destination.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, collapse, severe weakness or new confusion after vaccination. Contact a clinician if the injection-site swelling is rapidly expanding, increasingly painful, draining fluid, or accompanied by a persistent fever.

Questions for your doctor

Ask where the vaccine will be given, when protection is expected, which reactions are normal, how to document the dose for travel, and whether any health condition changes your vaccination plan.
