What should you know about injectable glutathione?

Injectable glutathione is a clinician-administered treatment whose cosmetic benefits are uncertain and whose risks depend on the product, route, dose, and your health. It should not be treated as a routine skin-brightening injection or given without a proper medical assessment.

Glutathione, also called reduced glutathione, is a substance made naturally in the body. An injectable preparation may be delivered into a vein or muscle, depending on the product and the clinician’s plan. It is sometimes promoted for skin lightening, antioxidant support, or general wellness, but a marketing claim is not the same as a proven indication. Any change in skin tone can be uneven, unpredictable, or temporary, and the treatment does not replace diagnosis of a new pigment change.

The preparation itself matters. Sterility, storage, ingredients, route, and source can affect safety. Compounded or poorly handled products may introduce risks that are separate from glutathione itself.

Arrange an assessment with a licensed medical professional who can examine your skin and explain whether the proposed use is appropriate. Share your allergies, asthma history, kidney or liver problems, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, and every medicine or supplement you use. Ask for the product name, route, ingredients, source, storage conditions, and a clear plan for managing a reaction. Do not buy or self-inject an unlabeled product, and do not assume that a higher dose or more frequent treatment will improve the result.

Seek urgent medical help after an injection if you develop trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or face, widespread hives, faintness, severe dizziness, chest tightness, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Contact the treating clinic promptly for increasing pain, redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, fever, or a skin colour change around the injection site. These symptoms can signal an allergic reaction, infection, or another complication and should not be managed by repeating the injection.
