What should you know about inj keloid?

Short answer

A keloid injection can soften and flatten raised scar tissue, but treatment needs careful assessment because keloids may return or change after treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a keloid means

A keloid is an overgrown scar that extends outside the boundary of the original cut, piercing, burn, acne spot, or other skin injury. It may feel firm, itchy, tender, or tight, and its colour can differ from nearby skin. A raised skin lump has several possible causes, so a clinician may examine its shape, surface, growth pattern, and history before calling it a keloid.

An intralesional steroid injection places medicine inside the scar rather than into the bloodstream. The aim is to reduce excess scar activity and make the area flatter and more comfortable. More than one session may be suggested, and the response can be gradual. Temporary soreness, lightening or thinning of the skin, and small visible blood vessels are possible at the injection site.

What you can do next

Arrange an assessment with a dermatologist or appropriately trained clinician, especially if the scar is enlarging, painful, or catching on clothing. Bring a list of prior treatments and note when the scar began, whether it followed an injury, and whether close relatives develop similar scars.

Treatment may involve steroid injections, pressure or silicone care, laser treatment, freezing, or surgery selected for the scar's location and behaviour. Surgery alone can be followed by regrowth, so a clinician may discuss a combined plan. Avoid piercing or elective skin trauma through a known keloid-prone area until you have guidance.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical review if a scar grows quickly, bleeds without an obvious injury, develops an ulcer, becomes hot and increasingly painful, or releases fluid. These changes can reflect irritation, infection, or a different skin problem and should not be judged from appearance alone.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Does this fit a keloid or another type of raised scar? What result is realistic for this location? How many visits might be needed? What skin changes should I report after an injection? What plan would reduce the chance of regrowth if surgery is considered?

Questions people ask

Can a keloid injection remove the scar immediately?

No. The scar usually changes gradually, and follow-up helps assess whether further treatment is appropriate.

Can keloids come back after treatment?

Yes. Regrowth is possible, particularly after procedures that injure the scar, so prevention and follow-up are part of planning.
