Do not use needles or tweezers beneath the skin, and do not apply strong acids to an open or draining spot. For repeated episodes, a dermatologist can review grooming habits and whether laser hair removal could reduce the trigger.

Arrange care if the follicle becomes more painful, hot, swollen, or filled with pus, or if redness spreads. Fever, feeling unwell, a rapidly growing lump, or clusters of painful bumps warrant prompt attention. Persistent or recurrent lesions also need review because untreated folliculitis or another scalp condition may require a different treatment.
