Ingrown hair versus boil

An ingrown hair is usually a small follicle-centred bump around a hair. A boil is a deeper, painful collection associated with infection and may become swollen, warm or filled with pus. The two can overlap in appearance, and a photo or self-diagnosis cannot reliably tell them apart. Recurrent boils may need assessment for an underlying skin condition.

Apply a clean warm compress for comfort, keep the area clean, and cover any drainage with a fresh dressing. Wash your hands before and after touching it.
