Short answer

Influenza can cause widespread muscle aches because the immune response to infection affects muscles and produces a strong inflammatory feeling.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why aches happen

Flu-related aches often arrive with fever, chills, headache, cough and fatigue. They may affect the back, arms, legs or joints and can make ordinary movement uncomfortable. The symptom usually reflects the body responding to infection, but aches alone cannot identify their cause. Other possibilities include COVID-19, dengue fever, malaria, brucellosis, fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism or lingering symptoms after COVID-19. Travel, fever pattern, medication use and how long the pain has lasted help guide an assessment.

Relieving discomfort

Rest, drink fluids regularly and use gentle movement as your strength returns. Wear light clothing if fever makes you hot, and avoid strenuous exercise while you feel acutely ill. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a pain or fever medicine is suitable for you; check labels carefully and avoid doubling ingredients in combination products. Stay away from close contact while feverish or feeling clearly unwell, particularly around vulnerable people.

When to seek care

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, a stiff neck, or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange prompt medical advice for intense or one-sided pain, a swollen joint, a rash with fever, dark urine, or symptoms that worsen instead of easing. People who are pregnant, immunocompromised, very young or older should seek advice earlier when flu symptoms are significant.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptom pattern fits influenza, whether testing is useful, and which pain-relief options are safe with your conditions and medicines.

Questions people ask

Are body aches enough to diagnose influenza?

No. Body aches overlap with several infections and non-infectious conditions. A clinician uses the full symptom pattern and history.

Can I exercise with flu-related aches?

Avoid strenuous exercise while feverish or significantly unwell. Resume activity gradually after recovery and stop if symptoms return.
