What should you know about inflamed lump on neck?

A lump may feel sore, warm, or sensitive when infection or irritation activates nearby immune tissue. Causes can include throat or ear illness, dental problems, skin inflammation, or a problem in the thyroid region. The same features can overlap with other conditions, so examination matters.

A clinician may assess the mouth, throat, skin, thyroid, and lymph-node areas. Depending on the findings, they may recommend observation, blood tests, imaging, or sampling. The location and how the lump changes over time are useful details.

Record when swelling began, whether it followed an illness, and whether pain, fever, voice change, or swallowing difficulty is present. Rest and fluids may help during a minor illness. Do not massage, puncture, or squeeze the lump. Arrange review if it persists, enlarges, or has no clear explanation.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, faintness, or rapidly increasing swelling. Prompt medical review is needed for a firm or fixed lump, persistent hoarseness, unexplained weight loss, or drenching night sweats.
