What should you know about infected skin tag treatment?

A clinician examines the tag and surrounding skin before choosing treatment. Redness and soreness may come from friction or twisting, while warmth, swelling, pus, worsening pain, or spreading redness raise concern for infection. A lesion that is irregular, hard, rapidly changing, or persistently bleeding may need a different evaluation because not every bump is a skin tag.

Treatment may involve gentle cleansing, a dressing plan, and medicine when infection is diagnosed. Removing the tag while it is inflamed is not always the first step; timing depends on its appearance, attachment, location, and the condition of nearby skin.

Follow the prescribed wound-care plan and keep the area dry or covered as directed. Do not use antibiotics left over from another illness, or try to burn, freeze, or cut the tag at home. Once appropriate, a clinician may remove it with cryotherapy, electrosurgery, or another minor technique. Ask how to clean the site, protect it from rubbing, and recognize normal healing versus worsening inflammation. If the specimen looks unusual, the clinician may send it for laboratory examination.

Seek urgent care if redness is spreading quickly, pain becomes severe, bleeding is difficult to control, pus is increasing, or you develop fever, shaking chills, faintness, confusion, or breathing difficulty. After removal, seek prompt advice if the wound opens, drainage becomes foul-smelling, swelling worsens, or the skin changes colour around the site.

Ask what finding supports infection, whether removal should wait, and which option suits the tag's location. Clarify whether a sample will be examined, how to manage pain and dressings, when normal activities can resume, and which changes require same-day care.
