What should you know about infected skin tag?

A skin tag can become irritated or infected after rubbing against clothing, shaving, twisting on its stalk, or being scratched. Signs include increasing tenderness, warmth, swelling, spreading redness, crusting, or cloudy drainage. Bleeding after catching a tag does not by itself prove infection, but bleeding that will not stop needs assessment. A changing, firm, dark, or irregular growth may not be a simple skin tag and should be diagnosed rather than treated at home.

Keep the area clean and avoid cutting, tying off, burning, or applying household products. These actions can cause bleeding, scarring, and infection while making the lesion harder to assess.

Arrange a medical review if the area is painful, draining, or becoming more red. Until then, wash gently, pat dry, reduce friction, and cover it with a clean dressing if it catches on clothing. A clinician may decide that observation is enough, treat an infection, or remove the tag after checking its appearance. Removal options can include cryotherapy, electrosurgery, or a minor procedure selected for the location and size.

Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, fever, red streaks, heavy bleeding, marked swelling, pus with a strong odour, or feeling faint or confused. Get prompt assessment if the lesion turns black, enlarges quickly, or repeatedly bleeds without rubbing, because those features require a clinician to reconsider the diagnosis.
