Short answer

The safest first remedy for an infant’s stuffy nose is gentle saline, with medical advice before medicines.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why infants become congested

Mucus narrows an infant’s already small nasal passages. Colds are a common reason, but irritation from smoke, fragrance or dry air can add to the problem. Ongoing sneezing and clear discharge may fit Allergic Rhinitis, although a baby’s symptoms still need context from an examination.

Congestion can sound worse when a baby lies down. The useful questions are whether breathing remains comfortable, whether feeds are completing, and whether the baby is alert and producing wet nappies. A blocked nose does not by itself show which condition is responsible.

Remedies to try

Place infant saline drops in the nose as directed, wait briefly for mucus to loosen, and gently clean what comes out. Use a soft cloth around the nostrils and wash your hands before and after care. Continue breast or bottle feeding; offer smaller amounts more frequently if the baby pauses often.

Keep the sleeping space smoke-free and avoid vapour rubs, essential oils and steam near the baby. Do not prop the mattress or use pillows to change sleep position. Avoid cough-and-cold products unless a clinician has prescribed or advised the exact product for your infant.

When help is needed

Get urgent help for ribs pulling in with breaths, grunting, blue or grey colouring, severe sleepiness, or an infant who cannot feed. Contact a clinician promptly if wet nappies become less frequent, fever is concerning for your baby’s age, or congestion lasts or repeatedly returns. Persistent symptoms may need assessment for allergy or sinus problems.

Questions to take along

Ask how to use saline safely, how to judge hydration, and whether your baby’s pattern needs assessment for Common Cold, Allergic Rhinitis or another cause.

Questions people ask

Is steam a good remedy for a baby’s blocked nose?

Avoid hot steam because it can burn a baby. Saline and clinician guidance are safer choices.

Should I stop milk feeds during congestion?

No. Continue usual milk feeds, using smaller and more frequent feeds if breathing pauses make feeding tiring.
