Infant stuffy nose at night: what to know

Short answer
An infant's stuffy nose may worsen at night from infection or irritation, but breathing or feeding difficulty needs assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Before feeds
- Ask about age-appropriate saline and gentle nasal clearance
- Avoid
- Smoke, pillows, steam bowls, and adult decongestants
Why congestion can happen
A Common Cold can swell the nasal lining and increase mucus. Allergic Rhinitis or House Dust Mite Allergy may cause repeated congestion, sneezing, or itchy, watery eyes, although allergies need careful assessment in very young children. Sinusitis or Chronic Sinusitis may be considered when symptoms are prolonged, severe, or associated with coloured discharge and feeling unwell.
At night, lying down can make mucus feel more noticeable and can interfere with feeding or sleep. A blocked nose is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is less common but needs consideration if congestion comes with loud snoring, gasping, pauses, or unusual breathing effort.
Safe ways to help
Keep the room free from cigarette smoke, incense, aerosols, and strong fragrances. Ask a clinician or pharmacist about infant saline drops and gentle nasal clearance before feeds or sleep. Offer usual feeds frequently, because babies may struggle to drink when they cannot breathe easily through the nose.
Use safe-sleep guidance: place the baby on their back on a firm, flat, clear surface. Do not use pillows, wedges, steam bowls, or adult decongestant products. Allergy Medication should only be used when recommended for the baby's age and suspected cause.
When to seek care
Get urgent help if the baby has blue or grey lips, severe breathing effort, pauses, grunting, choking, or cannot feed because of breathlessness. Seek same-day advice for markedly fewer wet nappies, unusual sleepiness, worsening symptoms, or a young infant with a fever. Arrange a routine review if congestion repeatedly disrupts sleep or feeding, or persists despite simple measures.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the pattern fits a Common Cold, Allergic Rhinitis, House Dust Mite Allergy, Sinusitis, or another cause. Ask how to use saline safely, whether Allergy Medication is suitable, and which breathing or feeding changes should trigger urgent help.

Do not use adult decongestants; ask a clinician or pharmacist what is suitable for the baby's age.
