Infant flu shot: what parents should know

The injectable flu vaccine trains immune defences to respond to influenza without giving the child influenza. It does not protect against every cough, cold, or fever, and protection develops after the body has had time to respond. Babies may need a schedule chosen by their clinician because age, previous vaccination, and local recommendations affect the plan.

The injection can cause brief soreness, redness, mild fever, tiredness, or irritability. These effects reflect an immune response and are different from influenza illness. An inactivated vaccine contains virus material that cannot reproduce, but it can still produce a temporary local reaction.

Tell the vaccinator your infant’s age, medical conditions, allergies, current illness, and any previous reaction to a vaccine. Bring the child’s vaccination record and ask which dose or follow-up appointment is due. Keep your baby comfortable afterwards with normal feeds, light clothing, and rest.

Watch the injection site and your infant’s behaviour. Do not give preventive medicine unless the vaccinator recommends it, and use only an age-appropriate product and dose. A flu shot cannot replace handwashing, staying away from people who are ill, or seeking care when a baby has breathing or feeding problems.

Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, collapse, a seizure, or an infant who is difficult to wake. Contact a clinician promptly if fever is concerning for your baby’s age, feeding falls substantially, wet nappies become much less frequent, the injection site rapidly worsens, or symptoms suggest influenza or another infection rather than a mild post-vaccine response.

Ask whether your infant is eligible now, which vaccine formulation is being offered, how many visits are needed, and what reactions should be expected. Clarify the correct fever medicine dose, the best way to record symptoms, and what to do if your baby becomes unwell before the next appointment.
