What should you know about infant eye discharge yellow?

A small amount of sticky material can collect when tears do not drain freely. Conjunctivitis may cause yellow or green discharge that returns after wiping, often with a pink or red eye. Allergic conjunctivitis more often causes itching and watery discharge, although infants may not show itching clearly. The appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Wash your hands before and after touching the eye. Use clean cotton or gauze moistened with cooled boiled water, wiping from the inner corner outward with a fresh piece for each wipe and each eye. Do not share towels or use unprescribed eye drops. A clinician can decide whether treatment is needed after examining the eye.

Seek urgent assessment if the eyelid is very swollen, the eye looks cloudy, the infant is unusually light-sensitive, the eye cannot open, or there is fever with marked illness. Prompt review is also needed for pain, injury, worsening redness, or discharge in a newborn.
