Infant elbow dislocation: urgent steps for parents

How the structures involved in Elbow Dislocation differ from normal

Short answer

A suspected infant elbow dislocation needs prompt medical assessment, gentle immobilisation and no attempt at home reduction.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why an infant needs assessment

A dislocation means the bones forming the elbow are no longer aligned normally. In an infant, crying, refusal to move the arm, swelling or an unusual position may be the only visible clues. A fracture or another injury can look similar, so an examination and sometimes imaging are needed.

The clinician checks skin, circulation, sensation and finger movement as well as the elbow’s position. The injury may follow a fall, a pull on the arm or another force. A parent should describe exactly what happened and when the child last moved the arm normally.

What to do while getting care

Keep the arm still in the position that causes the least distress. Support it with a soft cloth or your hands without tightening anything around the elbow. Remove rings or tight clothing from the affected hand if this can be done gently. Do not pull, twist, massage or test the joint.

Avoid food and drink until medical staff advise otherwise, because a procedure may be needed. A clinician may perform Closed Reduction when appropriate, followed by a period of protection and a review plan. Physiotherapy is considered later only when the treating team says movement is ready.

When this is an emergency

Go to emergency care immediately if the hand is pale, blue, cold or increasingly swollen, if the fingers cannot move, or if the child is unusually drowsy or difficult to console. Severe pain, an open wound, heavy bleeding or a visible deformity also requires urgent attention.

Even when the arm looks better after a brief movement, arrange prompt assessment after a suspected injury. Do not assume it has relocated safely; an untreated injury may involve a fracture or compromised circulation.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the elbow is dislocated, fractured or both; whether imaging is needed; how circulation and nerve function look; and how the arm should be supported. Ask when bathing, lifting and normal play can resume, and which changes should trigger an urgent return.

Questions people ask

Can I put my infant’s elbow back into place?

No. Do not attempt reduction at home because a fracture, nerve injury or circulation problem may also be present.

What might an infant show after an elbow injury?

The infant may cry, stop using the arm, hold it in an unusual position or develop swelling, although signs can be subtle.
