Infant dandruff home remedies: what to know

Short answer
For infant dandruff-like flakes, gentle washing and softening of scale are safer home measures than scraping or applying strong household remedies.

Flakes in a baby’s scalp
Infant scalp flaking is often called dandruff, but babies may instead have seborrheic dermatitis or cradle cap. Flakes can be white, yellow, or greasy, with mild redness underneath. Itching may be absent, and the baby can otherwise appear comfortable. Dandruff is not a reason to use adult shampoos automatically. The appearance, distribution, and condition of the skin matter, especially if there is a link to Itchy Scalp or Flaky Scalp symptoms.
Safer home measures
Wash gently with a mild baby cleanser, rinse well, and pat dry. If scales are thick, ask a clinician or pharmacist whether a small amount of suitable emollient can soften them before a soft brush is used. Never scrape, pick, or pull. Avoid essential oils, fragrances, alcohol, household acids, and adult dandruff products on an infant scalp. If flaking persists, a clinician may recommend Medicated Shampoo Treatment or Topical Antifungal Treatment, with instructions matched to the child.
When home care is not enough
Seek medical advice for intense redness, swelling, cracks, bleeding, ooze, pus, foul smell, or painful scratching. Prompt assessment is needed if the baby has fever, seems unwell, feeds poorly, or the rash spreads to the face or body. Arrange a review for persistent flaking, patchy hair loss, or a scalp that does not settle with gentle care, because eczema, infection, or another rash may need different treatment.
Questions to bring
Ask whether the flakes fit dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, or cradle cap; which cleanser is suitable; whether an emollient or medicated product is safe; and which scalp changes need prompt review.

Questions people ask
Can I use olive oil or essential oils for infant dandruff?
Avoid essential oils. Ask a healthcare professional before using any oil, because products can irritate delicate skin or be difficult to remove.
When should infant scalp flakes be checked?
Have the scalp assessed when it is painful, wet, bleeding, infected-looking, spreading, associated with hair loss, or not improving with gentle care.
