Infant cradle cap: what parents should know

Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, often causes yellow, white, or brownish scales on the scalp. The skin may look slightly red underneath, while the baby may seem otherwise well. Scales can also appear around the eyebrows, behind the ears, or in skin folds. It is not caused by poor hygiene and is not usually contagious. Avoid interpreting flakes alone as proof of allergy; a clinician can consider eczema, irritation, or infection when the appearance is unusual.

Wash the scalp with a mild baby cleanser and lukewarm water, then pat it dry. To loosen thick scale, a clinician may suggest Emollient Therapy followed by gentle brushing with a soft brush. Lift loosened flakes without scraping, and stop if the skin becomes sore. Keep oils and products away from the eyes, and do not use medicated products unless a healthcare professional recommends them. If the rash persists or involves other areas, a clinician may discuss Topical Antifungal Treatment.

Arrange a review if the scalp is very red, cracked, swollen, bleeding, wet, or painful, or if the rash spreads quickly. Seek prompt advice if your baby has fever, seems unwell, feeds poorly, or develops pus or a strong odour. Medical guidance is also useful when gentle care has not helped, when hair loss occurs in patches, or when you are unsure whether the rash is cradle cap.
