What should you know about infacol constipation?

Short answer
Infacol is used for trapped wind in babies, not as a treatment for constipation, so persistent difficulty passing stool needs separate assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Infacol and bowel symptoms
Infacol contains simeticone and is intended to help gas bubbles join and pass more easily. Constipation is different: stools may be hard or difficult to pass, bowel movements may be less frequent than usual, or a child may strain and seem uncomfortable. Straining alone can be normal in a young infant if stools remain soft. Possible contributors to constipation include changes in feeding, low fluid intake, illness, medicines, and conditions such as hypothyroidism. Irritable Bowel Syndrome and diverticular disease are adult conditions and should not be assumed in a baby.
Practical next steps
Check whether the stool is genuinely hard and note feeding, wet nappies, vomiting, abdominal swelling, and the timing of symptoms. Continue feeds as advised and do not give extra water, laxatives, suppositories, or herbal products to a young baby unless a healthcare professional recommends them. Use Infacol only according to its product instructions or a clinician's advice; it will not soften a hard stool. A clinician can advise on age-appropriate fluids, feeding changes, or treatment. Nutrition Counselling may help when diet is relevant for an older child or adult.
When constipation needs medical attention
Seek prompt medical advice for a baby who is not feeding well, has fewer wet nappies, repeated vomiting, a swollen or tender abdomen, blood in the stool, fever, unusual sleepiness, or ongoing distress. Urgent care is needed if the child appears severely unwell or may be dehydrated. Arrange review when constipation persists, keeps returning, begins soon after birth, or affects growth and feeding. Do not use constipation treatment meant for another person.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the stool pattern is constipation or normal infant straining, whether Infacol is appropriate for the symptoms, and which treatments are safe for the child's age. Mention feeding type, wet nappies, recent illness, medicines, and any family history of bowel or thyroid problems.

Questions people ask
Will Infacol make a constipated baby poo?
No. Infacol is aimed at trapped wind and does not soften stool or treat the underlying cause of constipation.
Is straining always constipation in a baby?
No. Some young babies strain before passing soft stool; hard or painful stool and concerning symptoms need assessment.
