What should you know about industrial linear accelerator?

Short answer

An industrial linear accelerator is a carefully controlled machine that produces high-energy radiation beams for planned cancer treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the machine does

The machine shapes and directs radiation toward a treatment area while you lie on a treatment couch. Imaging and planning help the team position your body and select beam angles. The device does not touch you, and the treatment team watches and communicates with you throughout the session.

The word industrial describes the engineering and manufacturing setting of the equipment; in a hospital, the accelerator is operated under clinical safety procedures. It may deliver conventional radiotherapy or highly focused techniques, depending on the treatment plan.

How to prepare

Follow the centre's instructions about medicines, clothing, food, and skin care. Attend planning appointments because scans, measurements, and sometimes a mould or positioning aid help reproduce the same posture. Tell the team about pregnancy, implanted devices, new symptoms, or difficulty lying still.

During treatment, remain in the position agreed with the therapists. You will not feel the radiation beam, although side effects can develop in the treated area over the course of care. Ask how to manage fatigue, skin changes, or other expected effects.

When to contact the team

Contact your oncology team promptly for fever, worsening pain, new breathing or swallowing difficulty, confusion, repeated vomiting, or a skin reaction that is rapidly worsening. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, collapse, or sudden weakness. The right response depends on the body area treated and your wider health.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which body area will be treated, how positioning will be checked, how many visits are planned, which side effects are expected, and whom to call outside clinic hours. You can also ask whether a focused technique is suitable and how treatment may fit around work or travel.

Questions people ask

Does the accelerator touch the patient?

No. You lie on a couch while the machine moves around you without touching you.

Can the machine treat every cancer?

Treatment suitability depends on the tumour location, treatment goal, imaging, and the rest of your care plan.
