Induced normal delivery: what to expect

Induction of Labour may be recommended when waiting is less suitable, such as with certain pregnancy or maternal health concerns, or when labour has not started as expected. The cervix may be prepared first. Depending on examination findings, the waters may be broken and an Oxytocin infusion may be used to establish regular contractions.

The process can take time, and the plan is reviewed as labour develops. Your baby's heart rate, contractions, temperature, pulse, and blood pressure may be checked. A Caesarean Section remains an option if vaginal birth becomes unsafe or labour does not progress adequately.

Ask when to attend and whether you can eat, drink, shower, or move around during the early part of induction. Discuss pain relief, monitoring, birth positions, and who can support you. Bring comfortable clothing, maternity records, and items for the baby.

During recovery, feeding support can be useful if you have questions about attachment, expressing milk, or combination feeding. A Lactation Consultation can provide individual guidance after birth.

Follow your unit's instructions about coming in. Seek urgent assessment for heavy bleeding, severe constant pain, reduced fetal movements, a gush or ongoing leak of fluid, fever, faintness, or severe headache with vision changes. Tell staff promptly if contractions become unusually close together or you feel unwell.
