Induced miscarriage: what treatment involves

How the structures involved in Miscarriage differ from normal

Short answer

An induced miscarriage is a planned medical or surgical process to end a pregnancy when continuing it is not safe or the pregnancy cannot develop.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the term means

Your clinician first confirms the pregnancy location and the diagnosis, often using examination, blood tests, and a Transvaginal Ultrasound. The reason may be a pregnancy that has stopped developing, tissue remaining after a miscarriage, or a medical situation where ending the pregnancy protects your health.

Management may be expectant, medical, or surgical. Medical Management of Miscarriage uses prescribed medicine to help the uterus pass pregnancy tissue. Surgical Management of Miscarriage removes tissue through a procedure. The choice depends on your symptoms, scan findings, health, preferences, and local clinical advice.

Preparing and recovering

Ask what to expect from bleeding, cramping, nausea, and emotional reactions, and check which pain relief is suitable for you. Follow the written instructions about medicines, bathing, sex, activity, and follow-up. Use sanitary pads if advised so you can observe bleeding, and arrange support for travel home if a procedure is planned.

A follow-up appointment or pregnancy test may be recommended to confirm that treatment is complete. Seek emotional support from someone you trust or a qualified counsellor; grief can occur even when the treatment was medically necessary.

When urgent help is needed

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding that rapidly soaks pads, severe or worsening pain, faintness, fever, chills, foul-smelling discharge, or feeling very unwell. One-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, or collapse needs immediate assessment because an ectopic pregnancy can be dangerous.

Questions to ask

How was the diagnosis confirmed? Which management option fits my situation? What bleeding and pain are expected? When will I need review, and when can I try for pregnancy again?

Questions people ask

Is an induced miscarriage the same as a spontaneous miscarriage?

No. It is planned with medical support, while a spontaneous miscarriage begins without an intervention.

How do I know treatment is complete?

Your clinician may use symptoms, examination, a follow-up scan, or a pregnancy test to check that pregnancy tissue has passed.
