Short answer

Indigestion in the stomach may feel like aching, burning, tightness, bloating, or uncomfortable fullness in the upper abdomen after eating.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding the feeling

People describe indigestion in different ways. You may feel full sooner than expected, notice pressure beneath the ribs, or have a dull ache that comes and goes. Burping, nausea, or an unpleasant taste can accompany the stomach discomfort. Acid reflux is more likely to cause burning behind the breastbone or fluid coming up into the throat, although symptoms can overlap. Gastritis and a peptic ulcer may irritate the stomach lining. Gallstones can produce upper abdominal pain, and a hiatus hernia may promote reflux. Helicobacter Pylori Infection is another possible contributor. These possibilities cannot be sorted out from the sensation alone.

Pay attention to the timing: symptoms during meals, after large meals, or when lying down give useful context. Note associated symptoms and any new medicine, including pain relievers, before speaking with a clinician.

What may ease it

Choose modest portions, chew well, and avoid rushing meals. Stay upright after eating and identify personal triggers rather than removing many foods at once. Limit alcohol and avoid smoking, which can aggravate upper digestive symptoms. Do not stop prescribed medicine without advice. A pharmacist can discuss short-term options, including Acid Reflux Medication, if reflux is part of the picture and the treatment is appropriate for you. If symptoms repeat, book a primary-care appointment.

Warning symptoms

Get urgent help if pain is intense, chest pressure occurs, breathing is difficult, you faint, or you vomit blood. Black stools, yellow skin or eyes, persistent vomiting, trouble swallowing, unintended weight loss, or pain that steadily worsens also require prompt medical review. Symptoms that repeatedly disturb sleep or make eating difficult should not be managed indefinitely at home.

What to ask

Ask your doctor whether the location and timing suggest indigestion or another digestive problem. Ask whether you need evaluation for reflux, gastritis, an ulcer, or Helicobacter Pylori Infection, and which medicines or foods may be aggravating your symptoms.
