Can indigestion cause shortness of breath?

Reflux or upper-abdominal fullness can create a tight, uncomfortable sensation, especially after eating or when lying down. That feeling is different from true breathlessness, where breathing takes more effort or you cannot speak comfortably. Shortness of breath can occur with asthma, acute bronchitis, COPD, bronchiectasis, anaemia, atrial fibrillation or angina. Anaphylaxis is another emergency possibility when breathing trouble starts suddenly with swelling, hives or throat tightness.

The timing matters: note whether symptoms begin with exertion, after food, during rest, or with cough, wheeze, palpitations or fever. Do not use the presence of indigestion to explain away breathing difficulty.

Stop strenuous activity and sit upright. Loosen tight clothing and use a prescribed reliever inhaler only as directed. Avoid lying flat after meals if reflux is part of the pattern. Arrange medical advice for new, recurring or unexplained breathlessness, particularly if it limits ordinary activity. A clinician may check your heart, lungs, blood count and medicines while considering the timing of digestive symptoms.

Call emergency services immediately for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, chest pressure, cold sweating, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back. Treat sudden breathing difficulty with facial or tongue swelling, widespread hives or wheezing as an emergency. Urgent assessment is also needed when breathlessness comes with a fast irregular heartbeat, coughing blood or inability to speak in full sentences.
