Indigestion and heart failure: what should you know?

Indigestion commonly causes burning or discomfort in the upper abdomen after eating. Heart failure more often affects breathing, energy, and fluid balance: people may notice breathlessness with activity or when lying down, fatigue, a cough, or swollen ankles. It does not mean that indigestion is heart failure, and digestive discomfort has many non-cardiac causes. However, heart problems can feel like pressure, tightness, burning, nausea, or discomfort in the chest, upper abdomen, arm, back, neck, or jaw. People with hypertension, atrial fibrillation, or known heart disease should take new symptoms seriously.

Stop exertion and sit upright if discomfort occurs with breathlessness or weakness. Note whether symptoms follow meals, exercise, lying down, or missed medicines. Take prescribed heart medicines exactly as directed and do not change diuretics or other treatment without advice. Arrange a clinical review for recurring indigestion together with reduced exercise tolerance, nighttime breathlessness, swelling, cough, fatigue, or palpitations. A clinician may review the heart, lungs, blood pressure, medicines, and fluid changes.

Call emergency services for chest pressure or burning that is severe, persistent, or spreading, especially with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, nausea, or a fast or irregular heartbeat. Seek urgent help for sudden severe breathlessness, coughing pink or frothy sputum, confusion, or collapse. Prompt medical advice is needed when swelling, fatigue, cough, or breathlessness is steadily worsening.
