Indigestion after hysterectomy: what to know

After an operation, the digestive system may slow temporarily. Anaesthetic medicines, opioid pain relief, lying down more than usual, and changes in eating can contribute to bloating, reflux, nausea, or constipation. Abdominal tenderness can also make normal gas movement feel uncomfortable.

Indigestion is not a typical way to diagnose the reason for a hysterectomy. The operation may have treated conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis, adenomyosis, or heavy bleeding, but new digestive symptoms should be assessed on their own pattern and timing. Symptoms that continue beyond the expected recovery period, begin after a new medicine, or interfere with eating deserve a review.

Follow your discharge instructions and take medicines only as prescribed. Unless your surgical team has restricted fluids or movement, sip water regularly, choose small meals, eat slowly, and take gentle walks. Avoid lying flat immediately after eating, and ask before using an antacid, laxative, or herbal product because some options may conflict with your medicines or recovery plan.

Keep track of bowel movements, vomiting, pain location, temperature, and whether food or fluids stay down. Give the surgical team a clear timeline, especially if symptoms appeared suddenly or are getting worse.

Contact your surgical team promptly for worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen or hard abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, fever, wound redness or discharge, or difficulty keeping fluids down. Seek emergency help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, or sudden severe pain. Do not assume these symptoms are ordinary indigestion after surgery.

Ask whether your medicines can cause reflux or constipation, what bowel pattern is expected during recovery, which treatments are safe, how much activity is appropriate, and which symptoms require same-day assessment.
