During colonoscopy, air or carbon dioxide may be used to open the bowel, which can leave bloating, gas, cramping, or a feeling of fullness afterward. Fasting, the bowel preparation, sedation, and returning to food can also temporarily change bowel habits. If a polyp was removed, the bowel lining has an additional healing site. These effects do not by themselves indicate bowel cancer.

Mild discomfort should gradually ease. Your discharge instructions may recommend starting with fluids and light food, then returning to your usual diet as tolerated. The advice can differ if you had polyp removal, a biopsy, or another procedure during the examination.

Rest, drink fluids as advised, and take small meals until your appetite settles. Gentle walking can help move trapped gas if you feel well enough. Use only pain relief approved by your procedure team, particularly if tissue was removed or you take medicines that affect bleeding. Keep the discharge number available and report symptoms that are not improving.

Ask whether your bowel movements, diet, and medicines need temporary adjustment. A future colonoscopy plan may differ from this visit, so record what happened and mention it before another bowel examination.

Contact the endoscopy team urgently for severe or increasing abdominal pain, a hard or swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, fever, dizziness, fainting, or bleeding that is heavy or continues. Seek emergency help for collapse, severe breathlessness, or sudden intense pain. These symptoms can signal a complication and should not be attributed to ordinary indigestion without assessment.
