What cloudy urine may indicate

Urine may look hazy after you have not drunk enough, because it becomes more concentrated. Mineral crystals, mucus, semen, vaginal discharge, or some medicines can also alter its appearance. Cloudiness with burning when passing urine, needing to pass urine often, lower abdominal discomfort, or a strong smell can occur with a urinary tract infection. Fever, chills, pain in the side or back, nausea, or vomiting can suggest that infection has reached the kidneys. Cloudy urine by itself cannot identify the cause.

Notice when the cloudiness appears and whether it clears after normal fluid intake. Do not force large amounts of water if you have been told to restrict fluids. Avoid using leftover antibiotics or someone else’s medicine. If the change persists, returns repeatedly, or comes with urinary symptoms, arrange a medical review; a urine test may check for infection, blood, protein, or other findings. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, recent procedures, new medicines, discharge, and any history of kidney problems.

Seek prompt medical advice for cloudy urine with burning, urgency, blood, lower abdominal pain, or fever. Get urgent care for pain in the side or back with fever or vomiting, confusion, fainting, or difficulty passing urine. Pregnant people, children, older adults, and people with diabetes, a weakened immune system, or known kidney disease should seek advice earlier when urinary changes are accompanied by other symptoms. A clinician can distinguish dehydration from a urinary tract infection or kidney infection.
