Incomplete miscarriage meaning: what it involves

Bleeding and cramping can continue because the uterus is trying to empty itself. A clinician may assess your symptoms, examine you and use an ultrasound to check whether tissue remains. A transvaginal ultrasound can help clarify what is happening inside the uterus.

An incomplete miscarriage is different from a complete miscarriage, where the pregnancy tissue has passed, and from a missed miscarriage, where the pregnancy has stopped developing without the expected bleeding. The emotional impact can be heavy, and grief may occur even when the pregnancy was early.

Contact a maternity, gynaecology or emergency service for an assessment, especially if bleeding is ongoing. Treatment may involve waiting for the tissue to pass, medicine that helps the uterus contract, or a procedure to remove remaining tissue. Your clinician can explain the likely benefits, side effects and follow-up for each option.

Rest when you need to, use sanitary pads so you can observe bleeding, and avoid putting anything in the vagina until a clinician advises that it is suitable. A follow-up appointment or pregnancy test may be used to confirm that the miscarriage has completed.

Seek urgent medical help for very heavy bleeding, severe or worsening abdominal pain, faintness, dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, fever, chills, or feeling suddenly unwell. These symptoms can signal significant blood loss, infection or another pregnancy-related emergency.

If you know or might be pregnant and have one-sided pain, collapse or shoulder-tip pain, do not wait for a routine appointment. An ectopic pregnancy can require urgent assessment, even when bleeding resembles a miscarriage.

Ask whether an ultrasound is needed, whether waiting, medicine or a procedure is appropriate, how bleeding should be monitored, and when follow-up will occur. You can also ask when it is safe to resume sexual activity, whether you need blood tests, and what emotional support is available.
