What should you know about incipient heart failure?

Heart failure means the heart is not meeting the body's needs as effectively as it should. Early changes may cause breathlessness during activity, tiredness, a cough, ankle swelling, or a noticeable reduction in exercise tolerance. Some people have few symptoms at first. These symptoms have many possible causes, so a cough or fatigue does not by itself establish heart failure.

Assessment may include blood pressure, pulse, oxygen level, heart and lung examination, blood tests, an electrocardiogram, and an echocardiogram. High blood pressure and atrial fibrillation can contribute to heart strain and should be reviewed.

Book a timely medical review if symptoms are new, recurring, or affecting daily activities. Record when breathlessness occurs, whether swelling changes during the day, and any rapid change in weight.
