Short answer

A pediatric incentive spirometer encourages a child to take slow deep breaths, while an adult checks technique and watches for breathing difficulty.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a child sees

The balls or marker move when air is drawn in through the mouthpiece. They are visual feedback, not a grade or a diagnosis. A child’s result depends on size, age, alertness, posture, seal around the mouthpiece and willingness to take a slow breath.

Children often learn better when a nurse, therapist or caregiver demonstrates first. The prescribed target should come from the child’s healthcare team; do not compare a child’s movement with an adult’s or another child’s result. Formal spirometry is a separate lung-function test.

Making practice easier

Have the child sit upright with feet supported. Help them close their lips around the mouthpiece, breathe in gently and steadily, and rest between attempts. Use calm praise and short practice periods. Never turn the exercise into a competition or make the child continue through distress.

An adult should remain nearby, especially if the child is recovering from illness or surgery. Follow the prescribed schedule, clean the mouthpiece as directed, and record concerns rather than trying to adjust the target yourself.

When to seek care

Get urgent help if the child is struggling to breathe, has blue or grey lips, becomes unusually sleepy or confused, faints, or cannot speak or cry normally because of breathlessness. Contact the treating team if breathing worsens, fever appears, chest pain develops, or the child repeatedly cannot reach the agreed target.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which mouthpiece and target suit the child, how often practice is needed, when to stop, and whether an adult should record readings. Ask whether formal Spirometry is suitable for the child’s age and situation.

Ordered by verification status and how complete each clinic's public record is, then alphabetically. This is a directory listing, not a ranking — Zavis does not rate or recommend providers.

Questions people ask

Should a child chase all the balls?

Not unless the care team specifically asks for that. Smooth, comfortable inhalation matters more than forcing a high display.

What if the child becomes dizzy?

Stop, let the child rest and breathe normally, and seek clinical advice if symptoms persist or recur.
