What should you know about incentive spirometer and asthma?

Asthma narrows and inflames the airways, which can cause wheeze, cough, chest tightness and breathlessness. An incentive spirometer provides feedback during a slow inhalation, but its reading is not the same as a peak-flow measurement or formal spirometry. It may be suggested for a separate reason, such as recovery after an operation or reduced activity. Deep-breathing practice must not delay a reliever inhaler or urgent care when asthma symptoms are escalating.

Use the device only in the way your clinician demonstrated. Sit upright, breathe in gently through the mouthpiece and pause if you feel dizzy, cough repeatedly or become more tight-chested. Keep following your written asthma action plan and take controller or reliever medicines exactly as prescribed. If you are having an asthma flare, ask which breathing exercises are suitable; forcing repeated deep breaths can feel uncomfortable and is not a substitute for treatment.

Use your urgent asthma plan and seek emergency help if you are struggling to speak, breathing hard at rest, becoming drowsy or confused, developing blue lips, or not improving after your prescribed reliever medicine. Arrange review when symptoms disturb sleep, limit activity, recur often or require more reliever medicine than advised.
