What should you know about inactive tuberculosis treatment?

Inactive, or latent, TB means your immune system is containing TB germs. You do not have symptoms of active TB and do not spread TB to other people through everyday contact. A positive tuberculosis screening result does not by itself show whether infection is inactive or active; a clinician may review your history, examine you, and arrange tests such as a chest X-ray.

Treatment is recommended after considering your age, general health, possible exposure, and the chance of TB becoming active. HIV infection and some medicines or illnesses can weaken immune protection, so tell the clinician about every diagnosis and medicine you use.

Take the medicine exactly as prescribed and follow the review schedule. Do not stop, share, or restart tablets without advice, even if you feel well. Keep a written list of doses and appointments, and tell your clinician about pregnancy, liver problems, alcohol use, or other medicines before treatment begins.

Contact the treating team promptly if you develop yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, severe nausea, unusual tiredness, a widespread rash, vision changes, or numbness and tingling. These symptoms can need a medication review. Ask how the medicine should be taken with food and what monitoring is planned.

Seek urgent medical care for coughing blood, severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, or fainting. Arrange prompt assessment for a persistent cough, fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or swollen glands, because these can occur with active illness and need medical evaluation.
