What happens to the bronchi in bronchiectasis?

Short answer

In bronchiectasis, the bronchi become widened and damaged, so mucus is harder to clear and repeated inflammation or infection can affect breathing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What changes in the airways

The bronchi are the larger tubes that carry air into the lungs. When their walls are damaged and remain wider than usual, the normal mucus-clearing system becomes less effective. Mucus can collect, making it easier for inflammation and infection to persist.

A long-lasting cough and coughing up phlegm are common presentations of bronchiectasis. The amount and colour of phlegm can vary, and symptoms may flare after an infection. Bronchiectasis is not the same as a temporary cough; assessment looks at the pattern and the underlying lung changes.

How it is assessed and managed

A clinician may ask about childhood infections, previous pneumonia, breathlessness, phlegm, smoking, and other lung conditions. A chest X-ray may provide an initial view, while further imaging is often used when the airway structure needs closer examination. Spirometry checks how air moves in and out of the lungs.

Treatment is tailored to the cause and flare pattern. It may include airway-clearance techniques, inhaled medicines, antibiotics for selected infections, and vaccination advice. Learn the appearance of your usual phlegm so a change can be reported early.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt review for a noticeable increase in phlegm, a new change in its colour, worsening breathlessness, fever, or chest pain. Seek emergency help for severe difficulty breathing, blue lips, confusion, or coughing up a large amount of blood.

Questions to bring

Ask which airway-clearance method suits you, what symptoms signal a flare, whether you need sputum testing, and when lung-function or imaging follow-up should be considered.

Questions people ask

Does bronchiectasis always cause daily phlegm?

No. Symptoms vary; some people have intermittent cough or flares rather than constant sputum.

Can the airway damage be ignored when I feel well?

No. A clinician can help prevent and recognise flares through an individual management plan.
