Implantation bleeding two days after sex

Implantation, when it occurs, follows fertilisation and travel to the uterus; bleeding immediately after sex is more likely related to the vagina, cervix, hormonal changes, or the timing of a period than to implantation from that encounter.

Bleeding after sex can occur with irritation, dryness, infection such as chlamydia, cervical dysplasia, or less commonly a cervical or vaginal cancer. The bleeding itself does not identify which cause is present.

Record whether the blood appeared during or after sex, its colour and amount, and whether there was pain, discharge, odour, or urinary discomfort. Avoid putting anything into the vagina if it worsens bleeding. Use a pregnancy test according to its instructions and arrange review if bleeding recurs, occurs after sex repeatedly, or follows an abnormal screening result.

Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, fainting, dizziness, fever, or a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding. Prompt assessment is also appropriate for bleeding after sex when you are postmenopausal or have concerning symptoms such as unexplained weight loss or persistent discharge.

Ask whether you need an examination, pregnancy test, infection testing, or cervical screening. Tell the clinician about contraception, new partners, menopause symptoms, medicines, and any prior cervical procedures such as a cone biopsy.
