Implantation Bleeding After Intercourse: What to Know

Implantation refers to a fertilised egg attaching to the lining of the uterus. If light spotting occurs around early pregnancy, its timing may overlap with intercourse, but sex does not make implantation happen and the spotting cannot confirm pregnancy.

Blood noticed immediately after penetration may come from a small surface irritation, dryness, or a delicate area on the cervix or vaginal wall. Infection, including Chlamydia, can also cause bleeding after sex, especially when there is unusual discharge, pelvic discomfort, or pain when urinating.

Bleeding can be more likely when vaginal tissues are dry or thinner, including with Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause. Changes on the cervix, such as Cervical Dysplasia, can sometimes cause bleeding after contact. These possibilities do not mean that bleeding after sex identifies a particular condition; an examination is needed to find the cause.

If pregnancy is possible, use a home pregnancy test according to its instructions and repeat it if testing is too early for a reliable result. A clinician can assess bleeding, pregnancy status, the cervix, and possible infection together.

Note when the bleeding began, whether it followed penetration, how long it lasted, and whether it was spotting or a flow. Record any pain, discharge, fever, dizziness, missed period, or positive pregnancy test. This information helps a clinician decide which checks are appropriate.

Arrange a medical appointment if bleeding happens again, occurs after sex more than once, or is unexplained. Until you have advice, avoid anything that worsens pain or bleeding. Do not insert products or use vaginal medicines to treat the bleeding unless a clinician or pharmacist recommends them.

A clinician may discuss a pregnancy test, infection testing, and an examination of the vagina and cervix. Further evaluation depends on your age, menstrual history, pregnancy possibility, examination findings, and screening history.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy or rapidly increasing bleeding, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, fainting, marked dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or feeling very unwell. If you may be pregnant, bleeding with pain or faintness needs prompt assessment because pregnancy-related problems can require urgent treatment.

Contact a clinician promptly for repeated bleeding after sex, bleeding after menopause, or bleeding with unusual discharge or pelvic pain. Rarely, bleeding after contact can be associated with conditions such as Cervical Cancer or Vaginal Cancer, so persistent or unexplained bleeding should not be ignored.

You could ask: Could this bleeding be from the cervix, vaginal tissue, an infection, or pregnancy? Do I need a pregnancy test or infection testing? When should I repeat testing? Do my symptoms or screening history mean I need a closer look at the cervix?
