Impetigo side effects and treatment reactions

The infection may make skin itchy, tender, moist, or cracked. Scratching can produce bleeding, new sores, or spread to nearby skin. Some people notice temporary colour change after the area heals. These effects do not by themselves show whether treatment is working. Atopic Dermatitis can also cause itch and broken skin, making the two conditions harder to separate without an examination.

Topical medicine may sting briefly or irritate surrounding skin. An oral antibiotic can cause nausea, loose stools, or abdominal discomfort. A new widespread rash, facial swelling, wheezing, or difficulty breathing may signal a serious medicine reaction.

Clean gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and keep fingernails short. Use a cool clean compress for irritation, and avoid fragranced products on broken skin. Follow the prescribed plan for Topical Antibiotic Therapy or Antibiotics For Skin Infection. Do not stop or restart a medicine without checking with the prescriber, unless emergency services advise otherwise. Record when a new symptom began and what was applied.

Contact a clinician if pain, swelling, drainage, or redness is increasing, if sores spread, or if symptoms continue despite treatment. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, blistering across much of the body, or peeling skin. Fever with a rapidly worsening rash also needs urgent assessment.
