What is a mild case of impetigo?

Mild describes the extent and depth of the visible infection, not whether it can spread. A few itchy bumps may open and leave a thin yellowish or brown crust. Discomfort can be slight, and the person may otherwise feel well. Scratching, eczema, close contact, and shared fabrics can move bacteria to other areas or people. Atopic dermatitis may leave skin more vulnerable, so an itchy patch with new crust deserves attention.

Wash the area gently, pat it dry, and keep it covered with a clean dressing when possible. Wash hands before and after care, change dressings as directed, and avoid picking. Use separate towels and washcloths, and clean clothing or bedding that touches the sore. Do not rely on household substances or leftover medicine. A clinician may prescribe a topical antibiotic for a localized case; broader infection may need antibiotic therapy by mouth.

Arrange an appointment if the sores multiply, redness expands, tenderness increases, or there is no clear improvement with prescribed treatment. Seek urgent care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, unusual drowsiness, or facial or eye swelling. Children, people with weakened immunity, and anyone with repeated episodes should receive individual advice sooner.
