What should you know about impetigo from insect bites?

A bite commonly causes a local itchy, raised area. Impetigo may develop when scratching opens the skin and bacteria enter. Increasing oozing, a honey-coloured crust, tenderness, or sores appearing beyond the original bite are reasons to have the area examined. An uncomplicated bite reaction is often mainly itchy, while infection can become sore and extend into nearby skin.

Dark or light marks can remain after inflammation settles, especially in deeper skin tones. These marks are called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and are not the same as active infection.

Rinse the area gently with clean water, pat it dry, and avoid scratching. Keep nails short and use a clean covering if the sore is rubbing against clothing. Do not squeeze blisters or share towels. A clinician may recommend treatment for infection, while an antihistamine can sometimes help bite-related itch and a topical corticosteroid may be considered for inflammation when infection has been assessed.

Do not put a steroid cream on a crusted or weeping area without medical guidance, because it may mask or aggravate an infection. Ask whether Antihistamine Treatment or Topical Corticosteroids are appropriate.

Seek prompt assessment when redness expands, pain increases, pus appears, or several crusted lesions develop. Get urgent help for swelling around the eye or mouth, fever with worsening skin changes, red streaks, or a person who appears very unwell. A severe allergic reaction with breathing trouble, faintness, or swelling of the tongue needs emergency care.

Ask whether the lesion is an allergic bite reaction, impetigo, or both; whether a swab is needed; what to apply to the bite; how to control itch without delaying infection care; and how to protect household members while the sore heals.
