Impetigo and ringworm: what to know

Impetigo is a bacterial skin infection that may cause quickly developing sores, oozing, and yellow-brown crusts. Ringworm is a fungal infection that often forms an expanding, scaly ring with a clearer centre, although appearances can vary. A fungal rash can become irritated by the wrong cream, while an antibiotic does not treat fungus. Eczema can also crack, itch, or crust and resemble either condition.

Keep the area clean and dry, wash hands after touching it, and do not share towels, clothes, brushes, or sports equipment. Avoid scratching and do not combine antibiotic, antifungal, and steroid creams unless a clinician directs you. A healthcare professional can examine the border, crusting, and spread pattern and select topical or oral treatment based on the cause.

Arrange an assessment if the rash is spreading, involves the scalp or face, affects several household members, or is not improving with the advised treatment. Seek prompt care for fever, increasing pain, pus, marked swelling, or sores near the eye. Children, people with weakened immunity, and anyone with recurrent infections may need earlier review.

Ask whether the pattern is more consistent with bacteria, fungus, or eczema, whether a sample is needed, and which products should be stopped. Confirm how to prevent spread at home and when towels, clothing, or sports gear can be shared again.
