What should you know about impedance flow cytometry?

A laboratory prepares a sample, often blood or bone marrow, and moves cells through a narrow sensing area. As each cell passes, the instrument records changes in an electrical current. Those changes can help separate cells by physical properties and can be considered alongside markers detected by standard flow cytometry.

The result is not a diagnosis by itself. A specialist interprets the pattern with your symptoms, blood counts, examination findings, and other laboratory or biopsy results. The method may help identify an unusual cell population or clarify how cells differ from one another.

Ask which sample is needed, whether any medicines or fasting restrictions apply, and when the report is expected. The sample collection is usually explained before it begins; a bone marrow sample has separate preparation and aftercare instructions.

Keep the laboratory report and ask which findings are reassuring, which need correlation, and whether another test is needed. A result described as abnormal does not by itself establish cancer, while a normal result may not answer every clinical question.
