What should you know about immunotherapy for metastatic melanoma?

Metastatic melanoma means melanoma has spread from its original skin site to other parts of the body. Immunotherapy can release immune responses that cancer cells have been suppressing. Depending on the scan findings, symptoms, previous medicines, and general health, an oncologist may discuss one medicine or a combination. The plan is reviewed as treatment continues rather than judged from one symptom alone.

Immune treatment can inflame healthy organs. Skin changes, diarrhoea, liver irritation, breathing problems, kidney inflammation, and hormone changes are possible. Some effects are subtle at first, and blood tests can identify changes before you feel unwell.

Attend blood tests and treatment reviews, and tell the team about every new symptom. Record bowel movements, temperature, rash changes, cough, headaches, vision changes, dizziness, and urine changes. Mention any autoimmune disease, transplant history, or steroid treatment. Avoid starting or stopping medicines without advice, because interactions and immune effects can alter the treatment plan.

Contact your oncology service promptly for ongoing diarrhoea, a spreading rash, severe headache, visual change, new breathing trouble, yellow skin, reduced urine, or unusual weakness. Use urgent services for severe breathlessness, fainting, seizure, sudden confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Prompt review allows the team to look for immune inflammation, infection, dehydration, or progression.

Ask which treatment goal applies to you, how scans will be interpreted, what happens if a side effect appears, and who coordinates care when symptoms arise. Ask whether other specialists are needed if melanoma affects the brain, lungs, liver, or another organ.
