What should you know about immunotherapy for melanoma cancer?

Some melanoma treatments block signals that stop immune cells from attacking cancer. They may be offered after surgery or when melanoma has spread, depending on scans, tumour features, previous treatment, and your general health. A treatment plan can involve one immunotherapy medicine or a combination. Your oncologist will explain the intended schedule and how response will be assessed.

Immune activity can also affect healthy tissue. Possible problems include skin inflammation, bowel inflammation, liver irritation, lung inflammation, or changes in hormone glands. These effects may occur during treatment or after a dose, so keep your treatment contact details available even between visits.

Tell the team about autoimmune conditions, organ transplants, steroid use, and every medicine or supplement you take. Before each dose, mention new rash, itching, diarrhoea, cough, breathlessness, yellowing of the eyes, severe tiredness, headaches, or changes in vision. Keep a simple symptom record with when it began and whether it is worsening. Do not mask a new symptom with leftover steroids unless your cancer team tells you to.

Call your treatment team quickly for persistent diarrhoea, a spreading rash, new cough, chest discomfort, severe headache, confusion, weakness, or yellow skin. Go to urgent care for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, sudden weakness, or rapidly worsening illness. The team may arrange tests, supportive treatment, or a temporary pause while the cause is assessed.

Ask why immunotherapy is being recommended, how scans and examinations will assess it, which side effects are most relevant to you, and whom to call at night. Also ask how surgery, radiotherapy, or another medicine would fit into the plan if the melanoma changes.
