Some medicines remove signals that allow cancer cells to avoid immune attention. This can give immune cells a better opportunity to attack tumour cells. The approach may be used alone or combined with chemotherapy, surgery, or radiotherapy, depending on whether the cancer is localised, recurrent, or has spread.

Before treatment, the team considers the lung cancer type, its extent, genomic tumour findings, previous treatment, and conditions that affect the immune system. A scan or examination during treatment helps the team judge whether the plan should continue or change.

Give the oncology team a complete list of medicines, supplements, allergies, and past immune-related illnesses. Ask how the medicine will be given, how often you will attend, and which blood tests or scans are planned. Keep a record of new symptoms rather than waiting for the next appointment.

Immune treatment can cause inflammation in organs such as the skin, bowel, lungs, liver, thyroid, or other hormone-producing glands. Early reporting lets the team assess the cause and decide whether treatment, monitoring, or a pause is needed.

Contact your oncology team urgently for new or worsening breathlessness, chest pain, severe diarrhoea, yellowing of the skin, confusion, marked weakness, or a severe rash. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or sudden neurological symptoms.
